Hygge (pronouced hooga) is a word that I've seen thrown around rather a lot over the last couple of months. It wasn’t until I was chatting with my sister and she said that she was given a book called ‘The little book of Hygge – The Danish way to live well’ that I actually understood what it meant!
There is no direct translation really, every country has its own slightly different version of it.
A few days later, to my surprise a little package arrived at work for me… enclosed was ‘The little book of Hygge’! along with a Copenhagen pocket guide (As I’m visiting in March) which seemed rather fitting as the hygge book was written by Meik Wiking from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen (Kind of sounds like the best place to work!)
I’ve been allowing myself at least half an hour each night to sit and read this book. In normal everyday life I am REALLY not a reader. I usually buy a book for a holiday but often I get to chapter 3 and give up. This little book however, I’m excited to get back to each evening.
I really couldn’t recommend the book more, I think everyone should read it. It makes you have YOU time and the more you read it the more little things you will do for yourself. Like lighting candles, making a mug of tea… running a bubble bath. All these things are really hygge… apparently what would make them even more hygge would be if there was a storm outside whilst doing all these things!
It’s all about cosiness, well-being, it has also been described as a hug without touching (which actually makes total sense in my mind). The more I read the more I love it. Although, already hygge has become an excuse for rather a lot of things. I really need that Neom candle because… hygge. Also, that cashmere jumper and jogger set is absolutely essential because, well… hygge! See where I’m going with this?
More than anything, this little book has made me give myself ME time again. I’m already sleeping so much better from reading in a low light with a candle on in the background before bed, rather than going from watching a jumpy episode of Silent Witness to lying in bed for an hour feeling absolutely wide awake!
I think everyone will find their own way to have their little hygge moments and I have definitely found mine. I’m all about spreading the hygge love… So far I have given away one of these books, and already have my next recipient in mind! Happy hygge to you all!
